THANK YOU ROBIN! 9 May 08 TWO DEVOTED FANS OF THE CELTIC TENORS, SUPPORTED BY THEIR CHURCH, RAISE A HUGE SUM FOR THE KENYA BUILD CHARITY. The entire Celtic Tenor team were completely taken by surprise after their most recent performance in Washington, North Carolina. Inspired by the Celtic Tenors music, and also by James' humanitarian work in Kenya, Robin Brown, her Mum, all the family and countless members of the Dortches Baptist Church in Rocky Mount NC, have been tirelessly fundraising for Cheryl's Children in Nairobi. They managed to raise over 5000 Dollars! Thanks to their incredible efforts, Cheryl's Children's Home can now at last buy a bus. James, and all of the Celtic Tenor team remain overwhelmed, and are blown away by this mind-blowing act of charity. This is what Christian charity is all about. NEW CELTIC TENOR ALBUM! 27 Apr 08 THE CELTIC TENORS RETURN TO THE RECORDING STUDIO IN LOS ANGELES IN MAY. In May 2008, The Celtic Tenors are back to the studio in Los Angeles to record their eagerly awaited fifth album. The lads are once again expanding their musical horizons, this time by embracing the work of some of the Great North American songwriters from Stephen Foster to Leonard Cohen. Supported by their multi-million-selling grammy-winning production team, this exciting new recording project, due for release in September 2008, promises to be their most exciting venture to date. The Celtic Tenors are already double-platinum selling artists in their homeland, and have topped the charts in Ireland, the UK and Germany, as well as Top 10 in the US Billboard and Canadian Charts. Countless TV appearances include a coast-to-coast PBS TV Special in the USA. JAMES' THIRD HUMANITARIAN TRIP TO KENYA. 26 Apr 08 JAMES RETURNS TO KENYA IN JUNE (2008). FUNDRAISING CONCERT IN HIS OLD SCHOOL OF WESLEY COLLEGE ON MAY 13TH! In the third week of June, I return to Kenya - my third trip there within the last twelve months. Last Summer, I was part of a building team (mostly from Sligo) involved in building and upgrading the dismal facilities at Cheryl's Children's Home in Dagoretti, very near the horrific Kibera Slum in Nairobi. Without any shadow of doubt this was the most grounding and humbling experience of my entire life. Everyone ought to witness the horrors of the Kibera Slum, close-up, and perhaps the world could for once and for all make sure that in 2008 human beings do not have to endure such nightmarish existences. Homes and streets made from human waste, and stinking open sewers flowing by, meant that at every step, I was retching. In November 2007, I returned to Nairobi, alone, in order to take the children on some day-trips, and to work with them close-up. In the evenings, we sang together, and learned songs. We also updated the "Cheryl's"website (www.cherylshome.net). With regards the daytrips, for many this was the first time they had seen animals other than rats and snakes, and the grateful children witnessed first-hand the real beauty of their homeland. The Kibera Slum and the Kenyan Rift Valley could hardly have been more different. I interviewed some of the children and hung on their every word as they told me of their horrific and varied pasts. I tried to hold it together for the interviews, though at times it was simply impossible. It was wonderful to see Cheryl's girls enjoying their brand-new accomodation and washing facilities. And also to see the boys with hope in their eyes, knowing that their turn is just around the corner. Already, the foundations have been laid for the building work in June. I reluctantly revisited Kibera, and this time spent time with families in their beyond basic conditions. The sights and smells of Kibera were as horrific as I had remembered. Countless homeless orphans still begged for our attention as we walked by. Cheryl's Children's Home gets no government funding whatsoever and thus remains in debt (it is a constant struggle for them to pay food-bills), but there is, without a doubt, increasing hope, and light at the end of what was a very dark tunnel for these orphans of Kibera. Samuel Sambuli, Phemines, Mary, "Uncle Ken" and all the Cheryl staff continue to do an incredible job. All of the children at Cheryl's now have a real chance at life, where before they had no hope at all. Sponsor parents for the children are still needed. May I re-iterate my heartfelt and sincere thanks to EVERYONE, young and old, who gave so generously to make my first trips to Africa a life-changing experience. The 2008 building team will also be furthering ongoing work at St Paul's Children's Care Centre in nearby Karen (Nairobi), another project started and funded by Basil Love's incredible humanitarian work just a few years ago. I visited St Pauls in November, and saw a two-week-old baby girl who had been found in a paper bag at two days old. The Centre had aptly named the little girl - Hope! St Paul's needs a lot of help too of course. As well as a fundraising concert in Nairobi on Saturday 28th June (venue and details to be finalised), James will be involved in a Concert in his old school of Wesley College (Dublin) on TUESDAY MAY 13th at 8pm. Performers include Maeve Coghlan (Soprano), Mary Callan Clarke (Soprano), Alison Young (Piano), Niall Mac Monagle (MC) and others! And here is the bit which I always find hard to do. If anyone feels like helping out with funding the June building trip, I would of course be most grateful (and so would the children!), and just rest assured that every cent is used wisely. We have just been informed that the Celtic Tenors Official Fansite at www.celtic-tenors-fans.com (See Contacts page on this site), which was established a few years ago by Anja Schickhaus and Beate Graf in Germany, has won a prestigious online award in Germany. The Fansite was one of 20 nominees in the Entertainment Category of the "Besucher Award" (besucheraward.de) and has been awarded the Gold Medal! Of course the Celtic Tenors and their entire team are all delighted at the news, and offer their huge congratulations and thanks to all involved in moderating and running this successful site so smoothly. 10TH ANNIVERSARY GALA EVENING OF THE OMAGH COMMUNITY YOUTH CHOIR. 17 Oct 07 The Celtic Tenors will perform at a special Charity Gala Evening celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Omagh Community Youth Choir. The choir was formed by Daryl in response to the Omagh Bomb Tragedy as a means of promoting Peace and Reconciliation through music. The choir have made many recordings including 'To Love in Peace' for Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber's musical 'The Beautiful Game'. The evening will include former British Lion and Irish Rugby player Trevor Ringland as Guest Speaker. He is co-founder of the One Small Step campaign promoting cross community activity and reconciliation. The Highlight for the evening will no doubt be the combining of the Celtic Tenors with the choir for a finale which will be sure to bring the house down. The Black tie event will be held on the 4th January 2008 in the Silverbirch Hotel in Omagh. SONG FOR THE RUGBY WORLD CUP!! 28 Aug 07 The Celtic Tenors recently recorded a version of the Pete St.John classic, 'The fields of Athenry'. This song is often sung at Ireland Rugby matches and the boys felt it would be an appropriate song to do in support of the teams effort to win this years Rugby World Cup. The song was given a stadium treatment and up-beat backing by top producers Charlie and Sacha Skarbek. It is hoped that it will spur the team and its loyal support towards lifting the elusive William Webb-Ellis Trophy in France.
